Transitional weather outfit - how to dress like a street style blogger

One thing I’m definitely going to miss when the warmer weather comes in spring is my favorite pom pom hat. I love transitional dressing – dressing for the in-between seasons, because it let’s me layer on. Layers are such an easy way to achieve a cool look. Add a bit of this, and a layer of that peaking underneath, mix in some great textures, and you have a killer spring outfit. The same formula works for fall outfits as well.

Here I’m wearing a suede jacket, over a grey wool sweater and a long white shirt. In transitional dressing, accessories are all important. I’m wearing a chunky pom pom hat and a cashmere grey scarf. I’ve also layered and coupon of sterling silver bracelets. One of my favorite silver John Hardy chain bracelet, and any lover of sterling silver should have at least one. It’s quite an investment, but I haven’t been able to find comparable weight and quality. Lastly I’ve completed the outfit with my staple skinny black jeans and my new favorite purple suede sneakers.

madewell tote hunter rain bootsDressing for wet and cold weather has usually been a challenge for me. For one thing, I resisted getting rain boots for a very long time because I didn’t find them stylish enough. Plus, I don’t like rain jackets. So, staying dry and warm is not always easy for me.

But now I have a new-found love and respect for rain boots. After I moved to New England, having rain boots became a necessity. My favorite rain-proof outfit now is a hooded field jacket (for wet spring and fall days) or a hooded wool coat for those cold and wet winter days, plus my trusty Hunter boots. I found a navy pair with a matte finish that I love. And they pair perfectly with my (somewhat water-resistant) navy hooded wool coat from J. Crew. And to keep my leather shoulder bag dry, I make sure to put it under my coat to hide it from the rain.

How to wear a long black coat like a style blogger

wearing black all black layers for winter style outfit ideaThe key to wearing black from head to toe in winter, and any other season really, is playing with texture. Done right, wearing all one color doesn’t have to be boring. Texture adds just the right amount of interest and makes the outfit cool.

Here I’ve paired a chunky black sweater, with big, exaggerated knit, a smooth black wool coat, and leather leggings (for a bit of sleek shine). To further add interest to the outfit, I finished it off with a neutral suede bag and booties. The suede adds a further layer of texture. Both the bag and the booties are intricately detailed and textured, and they stand out against the black canvas of the outfit. So while to whole outfit is very monochromatic, it certainly isn’t boring.

how to style black leather leggings like a bloggerI’m a firm believer in the power of layering for winter. And since I’m already starting to get bored from my winter uniform of a mama-bear down parka, I decided to winterize my faux leather leggings. Leather leggings and a moto jacket are pieces I would wear during transitional weather. So to make them winter-proof, I added lots of layers – a cashmere sweater, a cashmere scarf, and a chunky hat.

A Wool Poncho for Layering in Cold Weather

jcrew wool poncho in greyThrowing a wool poncho over a chunky sweater is a chic way to keep warm during cold days. I’m a big fan of layering. First, you can create new looks out of things you have in your closet anyways, and second, I love to pay with textures.
